Measures to Improve Nozzle Life

The working parameters of the sand-blasting jet are related to the working effect of the jet, so the current research on reducing wear and improving service life mostly focuses on the material selection and structural parameters of the nozzle.

For the study of sandblasting jet nozzle materials, the traditional method is to improve the hardness of the material, such as surface strengthening technology, or coating a layer of wear-resistant material on the surface to improve its wear resistance; or improve the finish of the inner wall during processing and manufacturing to achieve the effect of reducing wear. With the development of science and technology, new materials are also constantly used in nozzle manufacturing, such as the use of advanced composite carbide materials to make nozzles, but the material density is not much different from cemented carbide, and the life is dozens of times higher.

In view of the high pressure state of the ceramic nozzle at the exit and entrance, the symmetrical laminated ceramic nozzle was developed. Due to the existence of residual compressive stress in the material, the grain was refined, the hardness and fracture toughness of the material surface were improved, and the erosion-wear resistance of the laminated ceramic nozzle was greatly improved. By controlling the composition distribution of the material to achieve a reasonable gradient change of its mechanical properties, the residual compressive stress generated during the preparation of the material is introduced into the nozzle inlet to improve the mechanical properties of the nozzle inlet. Due to the improvement of stress state and mechanical properties of the gradient ceramic nozzle, the erosion resistance of the gradient ceramic nozzle is significantly improved than that of the non-gradient ceramic nozzle.

The shape and geometric parameters of the nozzle flow channel are the main factors that affect the jet structure and dynamic characteristics. When the working pressure, flow rate and other parameters are fixed, changing the internal shape and geometric parameters of the nozzle is the main means to optimize the nozzle structure, increase the sand speed and improve the jet effect.

Conclusion and understanding

Nozzle material, structural shape, inner wall roughness, jet pressure, sand concentration, hardness, particle size and shape all have an effect on nozzle wear. Improving the material hardness of the nozzle, improving the structure shape design of the inner flow channel, improving the finish of the inner surface, and selecting the appropriate working parameters of the jet and sand particle under the conditions of meeting the working requirements can reduce the nozzle wear and extend its service life.

The development and selection of new wear-resistant materials, the optimization and design of nozzle inner flow channel structure shape by testing and computer simulation, and the development of new nozzle inner hole processing technology to improve the finish of its inner wall are the focus of future research on hydraulic sandblasting jet nozzles.
