Different Types of Blasting Couplings and Holders

Blasting couplings and holders play important role in abrasive blasting equipment. From blast pot to hose, from one hose to another, or from the hose to the nozzle, you can always find couplings and holders.

There are a few types of couplings and holders in the market, finding the proper coupling or holder will increase the power of your blasting stream. In this article, we will learn different types of blasting couplings and holders.

Hose Quick Couplings

The coupling means the matching of the two items. A hose coupling connects one blasting hose to another blasting hose, a blasting hose to a blasting pot, or a blasting hose to a threaded nozzle holder. If you match them wrongly, there will appear corresponding signs. If the abrasive flow is weak, the connection between the blasting pot and the hose or between one hose and another hose may be poor. You should check all hoses and connections for leaks before taking a project. The standard coupling sizes are based on hoses OD, ranging from 27mm to 55mm. There are several different materials for couplings, such as nylon, aluminum, cast iron, steel, etc. You may choose the most suitable material for use.

Blast Nozzle Holders

Nozzle holders are attached to the end of the blast hose to ensure a secure connection of the hose to the nozzle. The holders are female threaded to accept the male threaded end of an abrasive blasting nozzle for a seamless fit. There are two types of standard thread for the holder to connect with the nozzle: 2″ (50 mm) contractor thread or 1-1/4″ fine thread. Another end is for blasting hoses. Like the hose couplings, the holders are sized for each different hose OD from 27mm to 55mm. There are also a variety of materials for nozzle holders like nylon, aluminum, and steel. It’s suggested to choose a holder of a different material than the threads of an abrasive blast nozzle to avoid them becoming stuck together while blasting. For example, choose a nylon nozzle holder to connect with your aluminum thread nozzle.

Threaded Claw Couplings

Threaded claw coupling (also called tank couplings) is a female tapered thread coupling with a 2 claw holding style. These are attached exclusively to the blast pot. This coupling must be exceptionally strong because it guides the initial exit of the blasting medium from the pot to the hose.  Different size pots and different size metering valves will require different size claw couplings, such as 2″ 4-1/2 UNC, 1-1/2″ NPT, and 1-1/4″ NPT thread. We need to make sure to match up the correct size for the pots requirements. Like hose couplings and nozzle holders, claw couplings come in various materials like nylon, aluminum, steel, etc.
